Fuerteventura Region

About Fuerteventura

The most eastern of the Canary Islands. Fuerteventura is an island with vast prairies where reigns silence and tranquillity. The island is the perfect place to disconnect from everything and dive into a kind of almost dreamlike surreal environment with its stunning scenery, dunes and palm groves. Fuerteventura is the turquoise of its waters, the white of the sand and the ochre colour of the interior.

Moving around

The regular lines of guaguas (the way the local call the buses) will allow you to travel between the different municipalities of the island. There's also the option of renting a car to move around more freely: you can even bring your car on the ferry. Fuerteventura's airport is located in El Matorral, 5 km from Puerto del Rosario, the capital of the island. It is connected to the rest of the island by bus.

Out & About

Puerto del Rosario is the capital of Fuerteventura. It spreads out around a busy commercial port whose main business is freight traffic. The port is currently expanding and a marina is being built. This city is not very touristy, so it's the place to see how locals people live.
Walking around town you will find many sculptures: this is due to the International Sculpture Symposium, an annual event established in 2001, which is held every autumn in the seafront of Puerto del Rosario in which concur artists from around the world.
In Fuerteventura, the star of the island is the spectacular natural environment. The dunes of Corralejo, north of the island, are miles and miles of sand contrasting with the deep blue sea and sky. In the island called Isla de Lobos only lives the lighthouse keeper and it's the perfect place for diving. This island is separated from the town of Corralejo by a narrow inlet of sea. Here you will find beautiful white sandy beaches where you can practice all kinds of water sports.
In the south of the island there is Jandía that hosts most of the island's hotels. Its beaches are almost untouched. In Sotavento, Barlovento and WIN Cofete you will be just you and nature.
In the villages of La Antigua, Tuineje or Betancuria you can admire castles and towers, remains of the ancient inhabitants of the island. The volcano Tindaya is also an interesting place to visit because it is one of the most characteristic areas of the island. Morro Jable is a southern fishing village where you can enjoy fishing and other water sports.

What's going on in

As in the rest of the archipelago the Carnival is of great importance. The dates of celebration vary but they are between February and March. Besides the Carnival, each town has its own patron saint festivities, full of tradition and different activities. The Carnival of Puerto del Rosario is held at the beginning of the year on varying dates (between February and March). During this celebration, dedicated to a different theme each year, stands out among other things, the gala parades and carnival's queen election. Another important holiday in the municipality are the festivals in honour of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, held around October 7th ,during which you can attend concerts and festivals.
Part of Puerto de Rosario's Carnival are "The Achipencos", a race in open boats made of hydrodynamic devices powered by clean energy.

Shopping

In all municipalities of the island, you can buy handicraft products of Fuerteventura. Street stands are usually organized around the island and sell all kinds of original objects.

What's cooking?

Fuerteventura's landscape is arid and it rarely rains, so the cuisine of the island had to adapt to this shortage of water: therefore the base of its cooking is goat and fish. In this island you'll have the chance to enjoy many delicious fish. In addition to the typical dishes of the islands, as the sancocho canario (Canary stew) or papas arrugadas con mojo (wrinkled potatoes with a sauce called "mojo"), the cheese majorero is also quite amazing: it's made with goat milk following the traditional methods.

Weather

The island has an average temperature of 21º C thanks to a combination of the cool trade winds and the warm winds of the Sahara desert.

So...

Let yourself be rocked by the sound of the wind and the waves in this oasis in the middle of the ocean and admire the most spectacular natural landscapes.
