Either if you want to move around the city or travel to other villages, the guaguas (bus) service is the most recommended transportation. On the other side, there's also the option of renting a car or of taking a taxi. To get to know the capital, there's nothing better than to walk around its sunny streets and on the beaches of soft sand.
The capital of the Canary Islands has a particular charm with its colored houses, its maritime neighborhood... To visit the neighborhood of Vergueta, you can start in Plaza de Santa Ana where you'll also find the Cathedral with its Patio de los Naranjos, another jewel that you can't miss. The Casa de Colón or the Jardín Canario are two other highlighted visits. Triana street is full of shops and there you can admire the great architecture of the city, most of all, its modernist facades. Las Canteras beach is one of the best and most beautiful urban beaches of Spain. This beach has a kind of rocky wall, called La Barra by the locals, that protects it from the tides and waves. This will allow you to swim peacefully or walk over the water when the tide is low. This is the place where the locals disconnect from everyday life, relax and practice all kinds of sports. It's one of the key meeting points of the city. In the western end of the beach, you'll find the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium. Next to the beach, there's the Puerto de la Luz (port of light) and, next to it, the Castillo de la Luz surrounded by a beautiful park. Isleta neighborhood, where the castle is, was born to receive the sailors. Besides Las Canteras, there are beaches all around the island that will suit all likes and moods. Maspalomas beach, in the south, is one of the most famous and visited; a large extension of sand next to a sand dune desert. If you go there, don't miss the Lighthouse.
In January-February, the Music Festival of the Canary Islands is held and there are classical music concerts all over the islands. Between January and March, takes place the Carnival of Las Palmas. It doesn't have a fixed date but the festivities last around three weeks. The highlights of the party are the Night of the Sheet when everybody dresses in white. Another important moment is the election of the Queen of the Carnival and the Children's Queen. The 24 of June, San Juan and the commemoration of the creation of the city are celebrated with a great party and both Christian and Pagan rituals. The festivities last a week and the 24th is the most important moment. It's a tradition to go for a swim in the waters of Las Canteras.
In Las Arenas Shopping Mall, with an original architecture, you'll find plenty of shops, movie theaters and restaurants. Sunday mornings, in Plaza del Pilar Nuevo, behind the Cathedral, a cultural and crafts market is organized where you can buy artisan objects while enjoying the music.
In the maritime neighborhood of San Cristóbal, you'll be able to taste delicious dishes of fresh fish. Some of the most typical dishes are Papas arrugadas con mojo (boiled potatos with their peel and mojo sauce), Ropa Vieja (a typical stew), Gofio escaldado (a typical cereal of the island) or Rancho canario (meat and vegetables stew). For dessert, you can taste the delicious almond Bienmesabe.
With an average temperature of 20º, Las Palmas is the perfect destination to enjoy the sea, the nature and the culture in any time of the year.
