Palma de Majorca is the biggest of the Balearic Islands and its capital. Even today, Palma reserves its ancient charm: you can still see fishermen fix its nets in the harbor or visit the amazing hidden patios of the town that have witnessed the history of the island. In Palma you'll have the chance to visit 5 different beaches and walk along the seashore of the beautiful Bay of Palma.
Palma is easy to reach both by sea then by air. The capital is about a two hours flight from most European cities and its harbor is one of the most active of the area. In Palma there is a very practical bus service of 30 lines that will take you wherever you'll need to go in the island.
The old town centre of Palma de Majorca hosts the majority of the town's tourists attractions: it could be a good idea to visit it on foot. The Balearic capital has fabulous beaches, five in total, such as, for example, the Playa de Palma or the Arenal. The Llotja, next to the promenade, is one of the most emblematic buildings of the city, with its gothic style. The Castell de Bellver is another symbol of Palma, and it's very peculiar because of its circular plan. The Catedral de Palma, the la Seu, it's another place not to miss. You can visit it and then walk around the old town centre: this is the best way to discover the streets, churches and patios of the Majorca. Do not forget to stop at Plaza Mayor and at the Palau de l'Almudaina If you enjoy walking you can take a stroll along the Bay of Palma up until the beach of the Arenal: it's a relaxing and beautiful walk. If you are a "sportaholic" this island won't let you down! You can do horse riding, play golf, trek on ancient roman paths, cycle and practice many water sports. The ideal way of seeing the island is to rent a car and explore its lovely little towns and the stunning beaches and bays that go around it.
During the Fira del Ram the city becomes a huge amusement park, for the enjoyment of the eldest and the youngest. The 23rd of June everyone overflows into the beach to celebrate the summer solstice. DJs and bands play music in the beach, lighted by candles and bonfires. Tradition says that at midnight everybody has to swim in the sea.
The old town centre of Palma is full of small traditional shops that sell local products: the paseo de la artesanía for example, collects art shops. The shopping street of the capital is Passeig des Born full of shops. The Ramblas and the Avenida Jaime III also hosts many shops. The Mercat de l'Olivar is a very charming traditional market.
Being the capital of an island, Majorca's gastronomy is deeply connected to the sea: its most traditional dishes in fact, are made of fish and seafood. Some of the most typical dishes of the island are the frit mallorquí, than can be cooked with meat or fish, the ensaimadas or the sobrasada.
Majorca's climate is quite mild therefore every time of the year is a good time to visit it. From spring to the beginning of autumn, you can enjoy its beaches whilst at winter time you can admire the beautiful blossoming almond trees. Every season has its own charm.
The official languages of the island are Majorcan and Spanish.
Have you ever wondered what those round cardboard boxes that many passengers hold when getting down the plane were? Come and see the ciutat, as the locals calls Majorca, and come back home with a stack of delicious ensaimadas.
