In the city there are three bus lines. Once downtown, the best way to move is walking. To go to the beach, there is public bus service called La Marina. There is also the option to rent public bicycles to visit the city on your own. The local train service connects Gandia to Valencia in less than half an hour.
Gandia has 7km of beautiful sandy beaches. These are divided into different zones depending on the profile of each visitor. Some are smaller and familiar, some have dunes and others offer a wide range of water sports. A good option is a walk along the beach to the lighthouse to admire stunning views of the Grao. In addition, both in the southern and northern part of the city there are other beaches worth visiting. In the northern part of the city you'll find the beach of Ahuir, where the last dunes left in Gandia are preserved. Xeraco beach is the closest to the city, and it extends into the Tavernes beach. In the south you'll find the beach of Daimuz. Farther south there is the beach of Oliva, full of dunes and visited mostly by the lovers of water sports. Besides the beaches, in Gandia you will also find various historical monuments. The Palacio Ducal, also called Palacio de los Borja is one of the most typical buildings of the city. Its structure includes the large inner courtyard and the Golden Gallery. In the historic center, another important building is the Old University. The Colagiata was built on an ancient Muslim mosque. The Torreón del pino, a big tower with a pine, is part of the old city wall and is located near calle Mayor. On the other hand, outside the city, you can go along the route of the monasteries starting in Gandia and ending in Alzira.
The festivities take place in Gandia from late September to early October. The celebration lasts about a week, begins with a parade and hosts all kinds of parties, fireworks, mascletaes, etc. In March the city celebrates the Fallas, as the rest of the community. The 23rd of June is the magical night of San Juan during which people lit bonfires on the beach and it's tradition to take a bath in the sea. During the parades of Moors and Christians, the first half of October, the different sides fill the streets with music and color.
The old city is like a huge outdoor shopping center where you will find many shops. The shopping streets are calle Mayor, San Francisco de Borja and Paseo of the Germanías. In Grao, especially in the Avenida de la Paz and calle La Verge, you will find all kinds of shops. In addition, every Thursday there is a flea market in Plaza Oriente. Along the promenade, you'll run into shops with everything you need for the beach.
Gandia's cuisine is mainly based on rice, fish and seafood. Some of the most typical dishes of the region are the arroz a banda or the paella. Stuffed peppers with rice and roasted meet are also very tasty. Annually, the city organizes a contest of Fideuà.
Gandia's climate is typically Mediterranean so in the summer sunny days are guaranteed to enjoy the beach. Winters are usually quite mild.
