It was built on the orders of General Cemal Gürsel, who was made the 4th president of Turkey after a military coup in 1960 headed by a group of revolting army officers. Its luxurious wooden interiors and delightful gardens were fully restored in 2004 and have since captured the imagination of many film makers who have made over 16 films here. You can relax and unwind in the hotel's Tulip Garden where General Gürsel once parked his car, decorated with festoons and paved with mosaics picturing tulips, a traditional Ottoman symbol. There is also another café and breakfast room situated at the back of the hotel called the Winter Garden, which is where the general's harem lived. How to arrive
This charming historical hotel is situated in the heart of Istanbul's historic centre. It lies just 100 metres from Sultanahmet Square, as well as the Hagia Sophia Museum, the Palace, the Basilica Cistern and many museums. The establishment is so close to the Sultanahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque) that guests can practically touch it from the residence. A number of restaurants, shops and public transport links can be found within 10 minutes' walk of the establishment, whilst bars, pubs and nightlife spots are a little further afield in Taksim, which can be reached in 15 minutes by public transport. Ataturk International Airport and Sabiha Gokcen International Airport are 18 and 55 km away respectively.
