The Pousada was built over 25 years ago in a part of the 16th century St Philips castle which was built on the orders of Philip II of Spain (later Philip I of Portugal) who employed the Italian military architect, Filipo Terzi. The fortress gives a commanding view across the sea and the surrounding countryside of the Serra da Arrabida, a mountain protecting the bay of Setubal and the mouth of the river Sado.
