The Porto Santa Maria Hotel has 146 rooms, including 109 sea view studios, 23 garden view studios and 14 junior suites (living room with dining table, sofas and side table), all equipped with kitchenette, hairdryer, heating and air conditioning, telephone, Internet, cable LCD TV, safe, Porto Bay amenities and balcony.This hotel features the ?Arsenal? restaurant with a wide range of themed menus, the ?Captain?s Bar? with an adjoining library with a reading corner and live music every day, the ?Promenade? bar next to the direct access to the sea-front promenade, meeting room, games room with billiards and a lounge.Likewise, it offers an outdoor swimming pool for adults, outdoor pool for children, heated indoor pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, a gym and a massage room.Also note the laundry service, Wi-Fi access in the lobby, Internet access terminal at reception, weekly rotation of daily themed buffets, golf green fee (special prices on the island?s 2 golf courses), tours (subject to a charge), car rental (charged) and the private parking.

Take the motorway towards Funchal from the airport. Stay on the motorway to Funchal/ Campo da Barca exit and leave the motorway here. Continue straight on to the crossing by the sea and take a left. Then take the right lane and follow this street. After passing the cable car on the right take a right and continue to the hotel entrance.

Guests may select their breakfast from an ample buffet; lunch and the evening meal can be chosen from a menu and the midday meal may also be taken à la carte.

The tasteful studios and suites come with a combined lounge/ bedroom, a bathroom with a shower, a hairdryer, a direct dial telephone, satellite/ cable TV, a radio, Internet access, a kitchenette, a fridge, a balcony and a hire safe as standard. The suites additionally include a separate bedroom.

Positive: What a classy hotel! Every staff member was so polite, efficient, smartly dressed and clearly enjoyed their jobs. Situated on the water front, next door to the old town, which is chock full with bars, restaurants & the famous painted doors and muraled walls. It's also on level ground, unlike most of Funchal. Our bedroom overlooked the park and was very spacious and comfortable. Beds were particularly comfy. We also had a kitchenette, but didnt use it, preferring to eat out and breakfast was included. Food at the hotel was varied, good quality and well priced. Shout out for the Captain's Bar Happy Hour at 17.00 each day, as that was fabulous. A good selection of drinks included and such good value. The roof terrace with loungers & a large jacuzzi is a great place to relax with a stunning view of Funchal... as was the pool area where lunch & drinks can be enjoyed. There are some nice bars right opposite the hotel too. We particularly enjoyed Bar No 2. In conclusion, this hotel is simply superb, is extremely good value as the many repeat customers would so say too. Highly recommended. Hope to return soonest.

Negative: Our room overlooked the park and does at times have a few unsavoury characters hanging around. However this did not detract from our stay as they kept themselves to themselves.

Positive: Breakfast was outstanding and well organized. Location near the old town, busses, cable cars and a huge choice of quality restaurants.

Negative: Lisbon passport control. It’s enough to keep you from traveling.

Positive: The location of the hotel was wonderful if you want to be close to old town. The lobby and breakfast area were beautiful. Our room was outdated and a bit noisy but the staff went out of their way to make you feel welcome. The underground parking garage was fantastic but cost 10 euro a day to park.

Positive: We loved the way we had ability to choose where to sit for breakfast. The entertainment in the bar was great in the evenings. The location can't be beat. We loved being able to see cats from our terrace, although a grounds keeper had a hawk, and the next day we didn't see any cats. That was sad. The pool was incredible. The breakfast buffet was great with a lot of choices.

Negative: The shower for the pool was cold water only, would have been nice if it could have been even room temperature. It was shocking after a swim. The heater in our room was subpar, we were very cold and could not get the heat to go on. We did get extra blankets, so it was ok. The only issue with the breakfast buffet was the juice was very watery, and the coffee was weak, we drank tea the remaining days. Our room was equipped with burner to heat up tea, but the tea pot didn't whistle, so I forgot I was making tea. Should use whistling tea pots, they are safer. The burner controls were hot, so it was hard to turn them off.

Positive: As at all the PortoBay hotels I have stayed in on both sides of the Atlantic, the amenities were first-rate. The bed was great and the sheets of great quality. The room was spacious and had a nice balcony overlooking a park. It´s also an added perk to join the PortoBay "Prestige Club" in that you get 10% off on anything you consume while at the hotel. I will continue to seek out PortoBay wherever I travel.

Negative: For dinner on site, I thought there was only a choice between a fulsome buffet and a truly basic bar menu. I guess most of the guests would go out to dinner anyway (as the hotel is right in old town). I finally realized that there was yet another menu in the main dining room (with the buffet) where one could order à-la-carte. Maybe advertising that fact more fully would be a good idea--but all may have been my own lack of focus when I arrived.

Positive: Hotel Porto Santa Maria is a very well-thought-out and comfortable adult only hotel. The location is perfect in Funchal - at the beach, next to the Monte Funicular, adjacent to the old town, near many restaurants, within walking distance to the new part of town. The rooms are spacious and have kitchenette facilities. There was music entertainment every night. Breakfast was plentiful. Above all, the staff were amazing. We highly recommend staying at Porto Santa Maria. One more plus: there is a parking garage if you have a rental car - no extra charge.

Negative: Brewed decaf coffee in the morning would be nice instead of the powdered packets.
