If you are searching for a historic hotel in the Alentejo region, then the Pousada de Vila Viçosa Dom João IV has got to be at the top of your list. There are many important sites to see around the picturesque town of Vila Viçosa, famous for its Ducal Palace and medieval castle, which houses a museum dedicated to shooting and archaeology. Founded by Jaime 4th Duke of Braganza in 1502, the palace was remodelled in the later 16th and 17th centuries in a rather sober Mannerist style. This luxury Vila Viçosa hotel is intimately linked with the family of the Dukes of Braganza. It was originally a convent, probably commissioned circa 1514 by Duke Jaime as the refuge for the daughters from his second marriage who could not find noble husbands. It is a wonderful example of the influence that Italian Renaissance architecture had in Portugal and the ways it was adapted to local traditions by native architects. The design of the church doorway is one example of these Italianate touches, as well as the Pousada's overall layout. Nowadays, the Hotel Pousada de Vila Viçosa Dom João IV welcomes visitors and corporates guests rather than noble spinsters, and is the ideal place for those in search of an unforgettable holiday, combining relaxation, great local food and a swimming in the hotel's outdoor pool. Some of the hotel's large halls have been turned into an outstanding convention centre, and a variety of activities can be arranged for corporate groups, such as fado music and Alentejo folk songs, tours of the Ducal Palace, castle, museums and regional wine cellars, and hot air ballooning.

The restaurant features a sophisticated interior with capacity for 100 people, and offers a journey through the regional flavours. The bar is cosy, perfect for a drink, and in winter, the fireplace creates a wonderfully cosy atmosphere. On Saturdays guests can also relax to piano music and let themselves be taken on a voyage through Portugal's history. A typical regional set menu might include clam chowder, dogfish in a marinade with garlic and coriander, roast leg of pork with white beans and regional sweets.
This historic Pousada has been converted from the convent of Cangas de Cristo into a modern accommodation recovering all the convent cells, the retreats and the oratories built by the nuns.
