Peschiera: For travellers arriving from the West, this is the gateway to the shore of the lake located in the Veneto region. Here the lake is so wide that it gives the impression of being a sea. This was an important centre right from Roman times and proof of its development and importance is given by the fortifications built under the Venetian dominion and developed during Napoleonic times and then under the Austrians who made Peschiera into one of the fortresses of the "four-sided stronghold". Today, the era of armies and battles is long gone and the streets now offer shops, restaurants, ice-cream shops, hotels, camp-sites and facilities for free-time activities. The genuine and delicious cuisine is based on products from the lake and from the countryside surrounding the town.
